Doing Dinner: Confessions Of A Radical Mother

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Maya Talisman Frost I love slow living. It’s peaceful, meaningful and downright radical in a go-go world. According to a recent article in (appropriately enough)Time magazine, groups of harried parents across the USA are joining a wave of slow living advocates by doing something really revolutionary–having one sit-down dinner at home with their kids each week. I don’t know whether to applaud or cry. The idea that parents are willing to undertake the Herculean task of rearranging their schedules to fit in a single dinner at home is laudable. The fact that it requires superhuman effort is terribly sad. How did we get here? The article states that back in the 1980s, sociologists decided that providing structured activities for kids would prevent juvenile delinquency. In addition, education experts suggested that American children needed to study harder to compete academically in the global market. At the same time, American business leaders looked around and discovered they were losing their edge. They bumped up hours and production rates in an effort to keep ahead of burgeoning Asian countries. This new competitiveness spilled over into the home, where mothers fresh from the work force took the corporate ideal of high productivity to the playgrounds. Yikes. I spent most of the eighties living and working in Asia. I taught English in Japan for five years, so I’m all too familiar with the “education mama” syndrome. What’s interesting is that the American mamas have taken that same emphasis on competition and achievement and focused on sports or other activities. Although we don’t have to suffer the unfortunate consequences of despondent students going through the examination hell of the Japanese system, we have burned out 15-year-olds having knee surgery for ten years’ worth of soccer injuries, and families who can’t remember their last no-TV, no-phone, real food meal at home. I think that somewhere between a manic preoccupation with education and a rabid adherence to frenzied activity schedules is a happy medium. It’s called dinner. People in Europe or Latin America are horrified to hear of families in the U.S. gulping dinner in their cars on a daily basis. It’s appalling that there are actually campaigns to re-introduce the concept of sitting down to eat. In cultures where families gather for meals every afternoon and again late in the evening, they view this obsession with achievement as baffling, alarming and pitiful. And they’re right. The truth is that it’s pretty hard to lose control of your family’s activities if you make dinner a priority most nights. It’s simply not possible to attend multiple practices each night if you’re expected at the dinner table from 6:30-7:30. When I tell people that I have four teenage daughters (ages 13, 14, 16 and 17), they look at me with a mixture of horror and pity. Life must be tough at your house, they say. You must live in your car, they tell me. Um–no. My idea of multi-tasking is breathing, talking, and hiking in the woods–all at the same time. My family eats a relaxing dinner together at home–by candlelight!–at least five nights a week. It’s the best part of the day. Don’t get me wrong. Sports are great for kids. So is drama. And music. And debate. But dinner matters, too. I figure that my kids aren’t going to be living with us forever, and while they’re here, it’s a lot more important to have dinner together than it is to have the girls sign up for every sport and activity on earth. What they lack in basket-shooting ability, they’ve gained in conversation skills, thoughtfulness, and an appreciation for family and shared meals. They don’t eat yogurt from a tube while riding in a van, then race home to study. Here’s a typical scene at our house: four girls sprawled on the floor in front of the fireplace, doing homework or reading. This is after we’ve had an enjoyable dinner and they’ve cleaned up the kitchen. It makes me feel terribly guilty. Shouldn’t I be exhausted and irritable, battered by constant demands for rides and juice packs? It’s not that my kids don’t do anything. They’re into all kinds of activities–drama, music, dance, volunteer work, and even jobs. Two are gearing up for lacrosse, one is in the midst of interviews for a year-long exchange program, while the oldest is in her senior year and doing the college application dance. It’s a busy time. And yet, they still eat a real dinner at home most nights. All of us–singles, married couples, young families and empty nesters–can benefit from the dinner ritual. By adopting and continuing the tradition of shared meals and conversation, we are emphasizing the importance of thinking and sharing ideas. If we want our culture to value thinking, we’ve got to start by offering a tribute to it on a daily basis. Okay, so my kids may never get athletic scholarships. They may never meet a single university athletic director before choosing which college to attend. They won’t be the next Olympic gymnast or ice skater, and they’re not likely to be conducting symphonies by the time they’re 25. They’ll have to settle for being happy, smart, kind, aware, motivated, and full of enthusiasm for the world and their place in it. Their father and I will just have to be satisfied with lasting memories of slow life with our cherished children, and our daughters will strive only to duplicate this same lifestyle for their own families someday. The Art of Seduction - It’s All in the Mind

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Steve Armstrong Most men want to know the secret of the art of seduction how to seduce and win the woman of their dreams. But in these modern times, women are more confident and independent than ever before. And that makes it harder. All the more reason to have a big headstart with a little inside knowledge. The first key is . . . confidence! Yes, self confidence is 90% of the game. If you are not confident, and have low self esteem, women will sense it . . .and run in the other direction. They love confident men. Some of the most successful seducers I have known have been average looking guys. But what has set them apart is their self confidence the ability to walk into a room and approach any woman there and start chatting to her. And to a certain extent you have to love yourself first … before a women will love you. By that I mean a healthy self respect, rather than arrogance. These are things we radiate subconsciously and others pick up on. If you have self confidence, then this is like a powerful magnet to women. And confidence is all in the mind. You can develop your self confidence in many ways from Visualisation through to Hypnosis. And the next key is . . . understanding how women think! When John Gray wrote Men are from Mars, women are from Venus he really awakened us to the difference in the way men and Women think, feel and act. By understanding women their thinking processes, their feelings, their needs, you can fine tune your approach so you are more successful. There you have it. In the Art of Seduction its all in the mind. In your own mind for self confidence, and getting in the mind of the woman. 2006 Steve Armstrong Steve Armstrong is author of Get the Girl: How to become a master of seduction available at http://www.getthegirl.net and Lasting Longer: How to cure premature ejaculation available at http://www.my-health-expert.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Steve_Armstrong http://EzineArticles.com/?The-Art-of-Seduction—Its-All-in-the-Mind&id=148675 what does a zolpidem pill do ativan 1 mg take effect how long ambien zolpidem 10mg caffeine and ativan

Royal Family Trees

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Trevor Dumbleton If you are interested in genealogy or history, royal family trees are excellent illustrations of the strange, convoluted, and always interesting tales of kings, queens and nobility. Take a look at a few them and you will be able to find the most remarkable tales with every line. Thanks to both the adequate resources and the bookkeeping available to the nobility, royal family trees are among the most complete, most accurate, and longest kept family trees in the world. The nobility is often very interested in the genealogy of its members, as it is important to figure out just who is noble and who is not. Once upon a time, it was assumed that those with royal blood were superior to those without, so a precise role of all the members of the nobility was necessary to ensure that nothing was spoiled by mixing with those of inferior birth. However, one of the problems with that was the fact that there was a very limited number of noble persons available. Thus, intermixing was a severe problem in the gene pool. So, when you look at a royal family tree, there will be lines that diverge, then suddenly meet up again a few generations down the road, when two distantly related, or sometimes not so distantly related people joined together and started creating new nobility. Thus, the generations started having that many more congenital problems, simply because they were receiving several genes that weren’t quite formed right and were being passed down with every generation, instead of being diluted by spreading them out amongst the general populace. As well, there constant marriages and remarriages of many members of the nobility make some interesting viewing. King Henry XIII of the England comes immediately to mind. This kind was marriage six times during his reign, meaning that he needed to either divorce or kill off his first five wives at the very least. When reading a royal family tree, every line is a story and every person a somebody. You don’t need to wonder who any of the names are, they will show up in history books somewhere. If you would like to read more about royal family trees, it is very easy to find them. They can be found on the Internet, in history books, and in the library. So feel free to take a look at them and dive into the strange world of the royalty and their often bizarre but never boring histories. Check one out today and start one of the most exciting history lessons you can ever receive. A Gathering of Gallstones

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jacob_Mabille] Jacob Mabille Many people are afflicted with gallstones whether they realize they have them or not. What are gallstones? They are hardened masses that may vary in size, usually consisting mainly of cholesterol and bile. They may be caused by a variety of conditions such as infection, too much fat in the diet, anemia, liver disease, obesity, diabetes and even pregnancy. People that are overweight seem to be more prone to gallstones as are women who have had two or more pregnancies. Although it is not known why, women in general seem to have a higher incidence of gallstones than men. Symptoms usually include pain or discomfort in the abdomen as well as nausea and indigestion. But many people that have gallstones have no symptoms at all. Often people do not know they have gallstones until they have a gallbladder attack. An attack can occur when a stone lodges in the bile duct. This can cause sharp pain on the right side of the abdomen that may travel to the back and shoulder blade. Symptoms may also include fever, chills, vomiting and even jaundice, which is a yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes due to accumulation of bile in the blood. A stone that becomes lodged could cause serious complications. Surgical removal of the gallbladder may become necessary. Other methods of treatment may include the use of drugs to dissolve stones and the breaking up of the stones by laser technique. Surgery may still be required in some cases. I found that I had gallstones quite accidentally after being hospitalized for pneumonia. In my case, I had no symptoms and so I was unaware that I had gallstones. They never caused any pain, nausea or other symptoms that would have indicated their presence. As you can see, the absence of symptoms doesnt mean that gallstones arent present. If you do have any of the symptoms described or experience pain or discomfort after eating, you may suspect that you could have gallstones. If you have any reason to believe that may be the case you should contact your physician immediately for early detection rather than waiting until a severe gallbladder attack occurs. Once detection of gallstones is confirmed your physician can recommend surgery or the appropriate course of action. The early detection of the presence of gallstones can prevent the future pain of gallbladder attacks as well as any complications that could arise due to a lodged stone. Sometimes what you dont know can hurt you. This article was written by Jacob Mabille, sponsored by [http://www.healthguidance.org] Health Guidance. Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Kat Lively In South America, not everyone observes the Western rites of medicine and healing. Carapanauba is mainly used as a supplement to assist the body’s ability to improve it own natural restorative properties. Daddy Tames the Ferocious Junior Boys

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Janette Blackwell Throughout World War II my Daddy had 4F draft status — meaning he couldnt be drafted — as there would have been no one to farm his Montana land if he were gone. His draft status bothered Daddy. He was young and vigorous, and he longed to fight the enemies of his country. He knew he was working hard for his country out there in the fields, but his life lacked drama. And perhaps he longed for military action more fervently on days when things werent going well on the farm. Daddy and other 4F Bitterroot Valley farmers liked to talk about the war. They talked about it in the barbershop, of course, and after church on Sunday. What MacArthur and Patton ought to do to the enemy. What the army, and the navy, and the marines ought to do to the enemy. Their male hormones buzzed around rapidly, doing what male hormones do. The mens ferocity was only exceeded by that of the little boys, who thought nothing of wiping out an enemy air squadron on their way to Sunday school. The junior boys of our Sunday school were especially ferocious. In fact these nine to twelve year olds were incorrigible, by the standards of the time and place. They whispered and giggled, nudged and pushed each other. They never studied their Sunday school lessons. And they openly chewed gum in church. Several stalwart men of the Corvallis Community Church had tried and failed to whip these incorrigibles into shape. The junior boys were taught in the church auditorium, only a few feet from the adult men’s and womens classes. And whenever the teacher of the junior boys lost control of those boys, the whole auditorium heard it. Then even worse things began to happen. At the end of our class sessions, when we good little primary children filed out of our classroom and into the auditorium for closing exercises, we were faced with a terrible sight: the junior boys had completely run amok. They were making V-shaped paper airplanes from their Sunday school handouts. Large white missiles flew everywhere in the auditorium, above the heads of the mens and womens Bible classes. Occasionally a boy scored a direct hit on the pulpit and even, once or twice, on the Sunday school superintendent as he stood behind the pulpit. And it appeared, from the expressions on faces in the mens Bible class, that they were focusing more on memories of their own boyhood than on the good Christian example of the Sunday school superintendent, who pretended nothing had hit him. The worst of it was, of course, the example it set us little ones: pure minded children who had not known, up to that moment, that one could do anything with a Sunday school handout besides read it. Formerly innocent primary boys were seen examining paper airplanes to see how they were made. It was easy to imagine the effect these illegal missiles were having on their sensitive childish minds, the subtle seeds of corruption thus being sown. Strong measures were needed, and the church leadership turned to Daddy to whip the junior boys into shape. They probably felt that in Daddy they had found a disciplinary tiger. But unfortunately Daddy was not a person who enjoyed whipping other people into shape, not even little people. Of course he couldnt say so. He was a church board member, after all, and the kind of young man the junior boys should look up to. The European trenches may have looked especially inviting that week. Daddy had rough going for awhile, and then, behold, he didn’t. I remember coming into the auditorium after my own Sunday school class, to find Daddy’s junior boys following his every word. They didn’t want the class session to end. Daddy’s hand appeared to be a U.S. airplane moving steadily on its just mission. His other hand, he said, was “See, this Zero comes up and tries to shoot down the B-29, and the P-38, see, it comes in there with its guns blazing. . . .” He and the junior boys had arrived at an understanding. If they paid attention to the Sunday school lesson and behaved themselves, there’d be time to discuss airplanes — real airplanes — at the end of the session. If the boys cut up and he had to spend time making them behave, the whole class period would be spent struggling with Jonah and the whale. Their choice.
