This is especially true for men, who genetically have a greater tendency to store fat in both the love handles and front belly than women do. If youre obsessed with fixing this, good; the benefits of losing your love handles and reducing fat in the belly go beyond vanity. When you begin to lose love handles and belly fat it also means that youre reducing the risk of problems like diabetes and heart disease. These are evils that abdominal fat brings that make it a direr problem than fat on the thighs and hips. The question is: How to lose love handles and excess belly fat that seems to have taken up permanent residence? Unfortunately, you cant simply do a number of targeted exercises each day and expect to lose your love handles. If you dont believe this, think about it this way: How many people have you met in your life that have fat thighs, butts, chins, and flabby arms, but perfectly toned love handles? Such a creature doesnt exist, at least not in this world. For many people, the abdominal area is the first place fat is stored, and therefore the last place it will leave. This is the reason the desire to lose love handles is such a common and frustrating problem. This article will make you smarter as to how to lose the love handles naturally, so you dont waste time walking the path to frustration, as so many others do. You may have already heard before that targeted exercises (spot reduction) dont work. This applies to the love handles, belly, hips, thighs and any other single region of the body. Now Im going to tell you exactly why. The way fat-burning works is that when you begin to burn fat from your body, its only after burning off glycogen stores first. Glycogen is the storage of carbohydrates built up in the body, and its only after these are depleted that the fat stores will begin to be used as energy. This is why aerobic exercise is always touted as the number one essential to lose fat. 10 minutes of continuous exercise will not get you beyond those glycogen stores. You need to hit the 20-minute mark and beyond for this to happen. Exercises like crunches, on the other hand, are anaerobic. They do not allow you to expend continuous energy for such a prolonged period of time. They will build the muscle underneath, but not adequately burn the fat that makes up the love handles and beer belly so that those muscles are visible. This does not mean that resistance training (muscle-building) exercises are useless, even at the beginning. Its a good idea to target this area to keep your mind on your ultimate goal. Just expect that you need to do more direct fat-burning exercise in addition. If you do both, you will find yourself at a place where you begin to see the muscle that youve built as the fat-laden love handles burn away. The other reason that resistance training exercises are useful to you is that when you build muscle, you increase your metabolism, which allows you to burn more calories at rest. It would be a good idea to include exercises targeting the love handles into a broader weight-training program. One of the most effective of the targeted love handle exercises that you can start right now and do anywhere is the Twist Crunch. Besides engaging the love handles, this exercise also warms up the spine, which helps to relieve stress. It is done by lying on the floor, feet hip-width apart. Place your head in your hands, bring your elbows in slightly, and as you exhale bring your head, neck and shoulders up and towards the left. Hold for a few seconds, and move back to start. Do the same to the right side, and alternate until the point of muscle failure. Exercises such as these should be part of a broader weight training schedule as you persist in shedding the love handles. Get a hold of some free weights and spend a 20 to 30 minutes a day for 2 or 3 days a week doing sets of lunges, squats, presses, etc to increase lean body mass and get that metabolism roaring. When starting an aerobic exercise plan, the most effective are generally running and spinning, but ultimately whats going to work best is a method that both burns fat effectively and is enjoyable for you. Elliptical machines, stationary bikes, cross-country ski machines, rowing machines, stair climbers, treadmills are all effective methods of gaining aerobic benefits. If you arent able to join a gym, jogging and swimming may still be options open to, or you may find a more enjoyable means at a local community center, such as a Jazzercise or Tae Bo class. Finally, its crucial to head more incoming fat off at the pass by not letting it, uh, come in. This means minimizing foods like chips, ice cream, pastries and meats that are loaded with saturated fat and replacing them with lean proteins (like fish and chicken), complex carbohydrates (vegetables, whole wheat breads, oatmeal, potatoes, yams) and unsaturated fats, such as are present in nuts, fish, extra virgin olive oil, and avocados. If you want to lose your love handles, there is little choice but to follow the above principles, and you can either resist this and get minimal results or take comfort in the idea that you now have a clear goal in front of you that gives you a bit more of a reason to get up in the morning. Short of throwing yourself off the nearest bridge, you resort to hiding in your bed for days, comforted only by the fact that at least you have a years supply of Moonpies by your bedside and your answering machine is on the alert in the hopeful case that your once loved one might call and beg to have you back. Only, that call never comes and that box of Moonpies? Its a constant reminder that the emptier it gets, the more bloated you are. But, you dont care. You wish the earth would open you up and swallow you whole. Sound familiar? Cases like this happens everyday. Falling in love has its risks and youve just experienced it first hand. You want your life back but dont know the first thing about how to get out of that black cloud that hovers over you, or even finding the energy to do it. What do you do? Acknowledge the fact that you have to go through three different stages during a break-up. Once you realize this, you can chart your progress and see that its only a short trip to recovery. STAGE ONE The Hurting Stage Symptoms: This is the hurting stage. Its where you are now. Its your hearts way of telling you that you have just experienced the worse kind of hurt there is. You cry, youre depressed and you have no idea how you are going to live without him/her. You leave messages on his answering machine and text him to the point where you are becoming psycho. You drive by his house in the wee early morning to see if his vehicle is still at his house or he is gulp off with another woman. You drive by where he works and contemplate going in and crying your eyeballs out to let him know this has hurt you beyond repair. You either eat tremendous amounts of comfort food or you dont eat at all and your health suffers. You cry on your co-workers shoulders and hope they can help you get out of this mess. You are, essentially, gone and a hopeless mess. How to cope: Now more than ever would be a good time to hang out with friends and watch a few comedies, even though you just arent up to it. Rekindle family relationships. Talk to older family members about how they met their husbands/wives and how they coped with troubled relationships. Gain insight from them. Try to remember things that brought you happiness. Was it a bike ride through the countryside? A trip to the beach even in the cold of winter just to watch the waves lap against the shore? How about that closet that is in desperate need of rearranging/cleaning/sorting? Now is the time to focus on you. You have to acknowledge that this is the normal process of grieving a relationship that has died. Nothing can really help at this point because as with the death of a loved one, this is the same feeling. Its a natural process. Give it time and remember that soon you will enter the second stage. THE SECOND STAGE The Getting Even Stage Symptoms: Remarkably, when your heart begins to heal, your hurt turns to anger. What nerve he/she had to dump me! You vow youre going to make his/her life a living hell as long as you are alive. You start dating. Only, these are rebounds. Rebound relationships most times happen in this second stage. Some last, but most do not for the simple reason that you will do anything in your power to inflict pain on the one who did it to you. How to cope: Once you get to this stage, youre halfway there. Even though anger is not a healthy feeling to have, it is a normal reaction after youve gotten over the feeling of hurt. However, instead of going postal and risk the chance you may do something youll regret later, take his/her picture and throw darts at it. Burn love letters. Finalize the break-up by getting rid of everything you have of his/hers. But keep in mind that years from now, youll wish you did have some kind of remembrance of the relationship because its all part of your life history. Whatever you do keep, look at it as a symbol of how well you did cope and can look at the relationship as a learning experience. STAGE THREE The Not Giving a Damn Stage Symptoms: You wake up one morning and ask yourself what you saw in this person in the first place. Nothing he/she does now bothers you. In fact, you are happy he/she has left because you are ready now to form new relationships, new loves. How to Cope: You are there. When you hit this last stage, you have finally come to the point where you can go on from here and form new relationships. Relationships that arent rebound. When you finally get to this last stage, you will become the person you once were full of happiness, hope and a quest for life. Once you realize the three stages of a break-up, it helps you to understand the process that is involved. Just as it took time to fall in love, you dont just fall out of it overnight. It helps to remember that there will always be a tomorrow and that there is always that second chance to find that special person who is meant to share his/her life with you. Life is full of second, third and even more chances. So, pick up your heart, go through the process to heal and chalk it all up to experience. Youll be glad you did. Here are five reasons prepping for class makes learning a whole lot easier. SHAVE HOURS OFF FUTURE STUDY TIME. Prime your mind to store and retain information by making sure you read the required material before you go to class. 1. Big Picture Overview primes memory Our memory works by associating new ideas with old ones. When you read the assignment, and review the notes from last class, you pave the way for new information to be connected with this big picture concept that you’ve just studied. It gives our mind an overall picture of what the main themes of the class will be. Our brains naturally store and recall information more effectively when we start with a big picture concept of the key ideas, and then fill in with specific examples and applications. 2. You’ll recognize and understand key terms more readily. Remember, understanding key terms, and their interconnection with key concepts is the basis for taking brief, memorable notes. By Tracie Johanson Lately I’ve been receiving a lot of spam emails. It’s amazing how many of them are promising quick weight loss without any effort! One of them even promised that their new ’super tonic’ was the new Fountain of Youth…..just take their product and watch the years fade away. If you’ll excuse the expression, that’s all just a bunch of baloney. The radio advertisements promise “weight loss without diet or exercise” and the infomercials brag about the newest and greatest pill that will magically make the fat melt away…..baloney! I’d like to ask those advertisers just a few questions: If your “magic-weight-loss-potion-miracle-in-a-bottle” is the real deal, then why hasn’t the media picked up on the story? If your product is indeed the Fountain of Youth, why didn’t my doctor recommend it? Why isn’t it being featured on CNN and all the major news networks? The reason why the media, and the entire world, isn’t going ga-ga over these new ‘miracle’ cures is that they’re not real miracle cures. However, I do have some BIG NEWS for you! Against all odds, after careful research and years of painstaking effort, WE HAVE DISCOVERED THE REAL FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH!!! The only real Fountain of Youth (at least, the closest thing we’ve found) is EXERCISE! There, now you’re in on the secret too! It turns out that our doctor was right, the Surgeon General was right, the American Medical Association was right, and your old coach was right too…..the best way to help keep the body young and healthy is through regular exercise! The human body can fail in a staggering number of ways. Yet most problems develop gradually over months, years or decades. That leaves plenty of time for action.
