Marketing Lessons From Amazon

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Cathy Stucker You may not have the funds to build an e-commerce system on the scale of Amazon, but there are several lessons you can learn from them that will help you sell more, online and offline. Make it easy to buy. Amazon pioneered One Click Ordering, where customers shipping and credit card information is stored for future purchases. They make it easy to buy without pulling out your wallet and inputting a lot of data. Can you set up accounts or keep customer billing information available so they can buy with a phone call or a signature? Get others to sell for you. Amazon.com Associates was the first online affiliate program. Associates link from their Web sites to Amazon.com, and they are paid commissions for the sales they refer. Today, more than 900,000 Web sites send customers to Amazon.com. You can implement your own affiliate program with inexpensive software, or by using one of many services that will administer your program for you. Offline, reward customers who send new business your way with free products or services. Show related products. While shopping at Amazon, you will see suggestions such as Customers who bought this item also bought . . . Make displays of related products in your retail location, group products and accessories in your catalog, and list product suggestions on Web pages. Provide customized information. Amazon remembers what you buy and even the products for which you have shopped. Your shopping habits are used to provide personalized recommendations when you arrive at Amazon.com. You may be able to use features in your online shopping cart to make upsells based on the item purchased. Send e-mails or postcards to customers who bought certain products when you have a new product or service that might interest them. Encourage the growth of community. Customers can post reviews to any product page on Amazon.com. Want to recommend a favorite product, or warn others about a dud? Post a review. Although the system isnt perfect, you can get a lot of good information from customer reviews, and the availability of this information encourages customers to shop at Amazon. A user group or online forum can make customers feel a part of your community. Do what you do best. If you visit Borders.com, you will discover that it is run by Amazon.com. Borders decided that they did not want to reinvent the wheel when it came to e-commerce, and turned over their Web site to Amazon so they could focus on their brick and mortar stores. You can learn from both sides of this relationship. If something doesnt fit with your core business, outsource it. If there is something you do very well, consider offering the service to others, even your competitors. Everyone wins. Although you may not (yet) be a giant, you can learn lessons from the giants such as Amazon.com. Apply them to your business and increase your profits. Copyright Cathy Stucker. Who Wants A Romantic Dinner For Two People

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Andy Maingam Ok, so who wants a Romantic Dinner for two people? Well, despite all the magazines out there telling us that the world has more Romeos than ever before, it’s still the lady that loves the wining and dining experience. That’s not to say that the fellas among us are against the idea, quite the contrary, if it makes our gals happy then we’re happy too. It’s just that the romantic dinner is not on the top of our list of things to do on a great night out! Now a game of pool with a pie and a pint at the Six Bells would be more up the alley of many a young chap, but unless he wants to be living the sad and selfish life of a lonely bachelor until his dying day, then he really needs to woo the heart stings of his fair lady if he’s to stay on side. And anyway, with a little education and commitment, he might even come to enjoy the romantic dinner experience. You see lads, food and romance have been entwined since the dawn of time. But it’s not just about great food. Heck, there’s nothing tastier than a double cheeseburger, a portion of large fries followed by a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with hot chocolate sauce. Hmm! But that’s not the deal here. Take the love of your life to Mac Donald’s for a nosh and see how cozy it gets after lights out! No, the perfect romantic dinner is held in a romantic setting, whether that’s on a picnic blanket under a Weeping Willow down by the river bank, a classy restaurant in the big city, or a quiet corner at home, it doesn’t matter, but it has to have the right ambience, and that can’t be held under the bright lights of a burger joint, no matter how much you’re in love. It’s important to have the right kinds of food ordered to the romantic dinner table and some folks may even chose from the range of well known aphrodisiacs on the menu. However, most young couples getting acquainted need little help from such foods to get their motors racing. A colorful selection of fine wines and great nosh, nibbled and played with in a location under soft lighting and soothing background music, is usually all that’s required to have the perfect experience. Don’t forget to feed each other too. The ladies just love it when your slow moving fork offers them a morsel from your own plate. Try it. Maintain eye contact throughout and let her take the bait. The rest, as they say, is plain sailing. Good food, great location, quiet, soft, and dreamy. I bet when it’s time to retire for the night there’ll be none of the ‘I’ve got a headache’ statements which you might get from a bite at the Burger King or a dance down at the noisy disco. The Romantic dinner is what you make it boys! Keep it simple, keep the phones switched off, and keep it just the two of you. What You MUST Understand About Your Web Numbers

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Alexandria K. Brown Two years ago, when I first started selling online, I focused on doing what I did best: generating useful content that people would want to pay for. But I quickly learned that selling a product online required me to have to learn about … …my Web statistics. “Yuck! Why should I have to do this?” I thought. “I’m not a numbers person. Such small details! I want to spend time on big ideas.” Then after a few months of poor sales, I realized I needed to learn more about my numbers so I could learn how to improve my results. (You can’t improve something that you can’t measure.) After getting acquainted with my statistics, I not only realized that this information would help me immensely, but I was relieved that it wasn’t so hard after all. It was just unfamiliar. There are four types of basic “Web numbers” I want you to understand. Don’t worry if I can handle this, you can too! 1. Sales HOW MANY SALES are you making? This should be easy to determine on your end. 2. Unique Visitors HOW MANY PEOPLE are visiting your site? To know this, you’ll need to know your number of unique visitors. Do NOT confuse unique visitors with “hits,” which refers to number of graphics downloaded. (For example, if you have a Web page with 10 graphics, 10 hits would equal one visitor.) Your Web host may already provide some stats you can access, but many of these programs are hard to understand and only track hits. If this is the case, it’s well worth it to use a low-cost outside tracking service such as WebSTAT (www.WebStat.com) that will show you your number of unique visitors. 3. Sales Conversion Rate Here’s where we start with some math. Take your number of sales during a given time, and divide it by your number of visitors during that time. We’ll walk through this in a minute. 4. Value per Visitor This tells you how much each visitor is worth to you. It’s basically your selling price times your conversion rate. Let’s Walk Through It Together Say Suzy Q runs a site that sells a special report on how to teach your dog to do a back flip. The report sells for $20. Last month she had 50 online sales. Her Web stats show that during that month she had 1,500 unique visitors. First let’s figure her sales conversion rate sales divided by visitors. 50 / 1,500 = .0333. We’ll round it down to .03. (If we’re talking about percentages, that’s about 3%. Or 3 sales for each 100 visitors.) Now, let’s determine her value per visitor. The report sells for $20, and we now know that her sales conversion rate is .03. So .03 x $20 = $.60. That means each visitor is worth 60 cents to Suzy, whether they buy or not. (Here’s a longer way of doing this but it may make more sense to you: Based on Suzy’s current conversion rate, she makes an average of 3 sales per 100 visitors. 3 x $20 = $60. So for every 100 visitors she makes an average of $60. $60 / 100 visitors = $0.60 per visitor.) This number tells Suzy how much it’s worth spending to get a visitor to her site. For example, if she decides to advertise on a pay-per-click search engine, she knows that $0.60 is the maximum she’d want to bid. (For a beginner’s guide to pay-per-click search engines, see my article at www.ezine-queen.com/payclick.htm) FR*EE Calculations Template Would you like a free fill-in-the-blanks template to help you make the calculations above? I’ve put one together for you! Send a blank e-mail to ali-39796@autocontactor.com and you’ll receive it automatically. What to DO With Your Numbers First of all, look at your unique visitors. If your numbers aren’t as high as you’d like, work on attracting more prospects to your site via your e-zine, search engine listings, advertisements, articles, etc. Then look at your sales conversion rate. If it’s around 2-3%, you’re doing pretty well for online sales, according to what many Internet experts share. Some months my conversion rate has been as high as 6%, but it typically hovers around 4%. Some marketers with hot products have reported conversion rates up to 10 or 20%. (Hey, it gives us something to shoot for!) Aim to continually improve your sales copy and your sales offer to boost your results. Keep a log of what changes you make and when you make them so you can see which factors help or hinder your sales. (There’s a place for these notes in that template I created for you.) Don’t Sweat It This may seem foreign to you right now, but once it becomes familiar, you’ll actually have fun with it. And there’s more where this came from, once you’re ready! (c) 2003 Alexandria K. All You Need To Know About Tooth Whitening

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Jackson Neshah Tooth whitening is the procedure for whitening the tooth crown that you see in the mouth, but what is really targeted is the enamel of the crown, the hardest substance in the human body that quickly gets discoloured if not kept clean always. Most tooth whitening range of dental products work effectively to achieve whiter teeth, which is why more dentist use tooth whitening system all over the world more than ever before now. And to make tooth whitening more interesting, tooth whitening systems can now be used both at home or office. Teeth are really a living part of the body. They have blood vessels and nerves. Teeth are enriched with lots of calcium. People who drink lots of milk or take calcium supplements have strong bones and teeth which are easier to maintain. It won’t surprise me if you are unaware that most of the tooth whitening syringe delivered take-home bleaching gel are approved as convenient replacements to previous burdensome bleaching procedures that lacked the sticky adhesive properties necessary to achieve optimum result. There are tooth whitening products today that work whitening miracles in days instead of weeks. Carbamide peroxide is the main ingredient in most tooth whitening formula, which has both potassum nitrate and fluoride that prevent tooth sensitivity providing safety of very high standard. Some times some tooth whitening products can be seen to show small bubbles; this does not mean that the product has been activated already as a result of peroxide decomposition. The bubbles are simply there due to the nature of its formulation. Most products’ catalogue pictures show these small bubbles even though pictures are, more often than not, taken from out of production line stock. Further more, it is not an a defect if a dark purple coloration should appear in tray with bleaching in relation to other amalgams. This is quite inconsequential as has been proven for many years now in clinical use, which has never shown any adverse side effect on amalgam restorations. Experts think that Zink present in old amalgams cause the discoloration. Because of the modification of anatomy in relation to oxidation that eliminates dark intra-dental organic dyes, conjugated double bonds of colour occur in different colour absorbing molecules. What really happens when bleaching takes place is that tooth sating molecules are changed to alcohols and terminal arboxylic acids which eats up light absorbing conjugated bonds that are really not cells but unwanted dye in dentin and enamel of teeth. This is why it is quite difficult to bleach the cervical portion of the tooth than the incised edge. Reason is that enamel is thinner than gingival so the dentin responds to bleaching easier than the enamel, yet the dentin takes longer to bleach in comparison to the enamel of the incised third. A study carried out at the University of Texas(Barghi N, Morgan J. Reducing the Adverse Effect of Bleaching on Composite Enamel Bond. Journal of Esthetic Dentistry, 1994, Volume 6, Issue 4; 157-161) shows that in pinch, one could bond immediately after bleaching using up to 35% carbamide peroxide with a mixture of A & B acetone specially made for dentin bonding. Now you may want to know at what age should one be considered mature enough for teeth bleaching. Well, little is yet published on children’s teeth whitening or the whitening of primary dentition. But a University of North Carolina study indicates that no one will respond to bleaching with adverse site effect in terms of sensitivity because of age. However, let it be a recommendation that to ensure thorough all level whitening, all teeth should have erupted before bleaching is done for a child, if not teeth that erupt after bleaching will definitely have a darker shade than the bleached teeth. Also about bleaching already restored tooth, it is advisable that the composite restoration be left intact during bleaching and replace it after bleaching. This should be done at least two weeks after bleaching to ensure that the shade of the whitened teeth has stabilised after peroxide has diffused out of the teeth to allow for better bonding. Tummy Tuck Alternative

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Gen Mason Modern day methods to get rid of excess fat must not be confused with means to lose weight. It must always be borne in mind that these methods are only meant for localized deposits of fat or lose skin as the case may be, which are stubborn enough not to respond to any dieting or exercise methods to get rid of them. What we are referring to are surgical procedures like Liposuction and Abdominoplasty respectively. In any case being less complicated, the liposuction procedure is the most suitable tummy tuck alternative. Liposuction as the name suggests refers to the removal of localized deposits of fat from just any part of the body. It involves flushing the fat out from the layer of fat deposit below the skin (called the adipose tissue). With the introduction of better tummy tuck alternatives like tumescent liposuction, the area from where fat is to be removed is first injected with a special combination of anesthesia and fluid before the surgery. This variant of liposuction is called tumescent liposuction. The purpose of injecting the fluid is so that it constricts the surrounding blood vessels, thereby making the procedure almost bloodless, while the anesthesia minimizes the pain. As part of the surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions that are approximately one and a half inch in length or lesser, in the area from where fat is to be removed. Thereafter a thin, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted; this is attached to a syringe or machine that creates a strong vacuum. The cannula is then carefully manipulated under the skin by the surgeon to siphon the unwanted fat out. In tummy tuck alternatives such as these, the degree of expertise of the surgeon is of supreme importance here, since in procedures such as these, the fluid that has been injected will mask the amount of fat that has been removed. The surgeon will hence need to determine the amount of fat that is to be removed by feeling and pinching the skin all through the duration of the surgery. Errors here can result in disproportionate fat reduction and an asymmetric appearance thereof. Those who lose large amount of weight or else mothers, whose abdominal walls have sagged due to pregnancy, often find it difficult to get back into shape despite exercise. Even if the fat goes away, it may leave folds of lose skin behind. In such cases, it is best to go for a Minituck which is a good tummy tuck alternative. The option of a Minituck is what those with small amounts of lose skin though, where the need to reposition the navel can also be done away with as far as possible. A combination of a Minituck along with liposuction can also be a very effective tummy tuck alternative. In both these procedures, the degree of invasion is kept at the bare minimum, because of which recovery and discomfort after the surgery is kept at a minimum. A good surgeon will offer advice on the best mode of treatment for each unique body type. Gen Mason does cardio and works out everyday. Teenage Dating - 10 Tips for Parents

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Felecia Sheffield PhD Dating among teenagers is a reality and seen by some as a right of passage from childhood to adolescence. Adolescence is also a time when your child wants to fit in, belong and be accepted. Parents must set appropriate boundaries to help their teenager come through this very challenging developmental stage. 1. Decide if your teenager is responsible and emotionally mature enough to handle dating. 2. Look at your teenagers track record. Do they have numerous instances of lying, breaking rules, and not following through on commitments or promises? Past behaviors although not a 100% are strong indicators of future behavior. 3. Discuss which persons and places are off limits. 4. Discuss in advance which dates require adult supervision or chaperones. 5. Know who your teenager will be dating before they ring the doorbell on the first date and have contact information. 6. Set the night(s) on which your teenager can go out on a date. 7. Set an appropriate curfew time and make your teenager stick to it. Decide with your teenager consequences for curfew violations. Research shows that most children and teenagers set much tougher consequences than their parents. 8. Let your teenager know that under no circumstances are they to drink and drive. It is also important to stress to them that they are also not to get into the car with someone who plans to drive after drinking. Tell them to call home for a ride regardless of the hour and no questions will be asked. 9. Be open and frank with your teenager regarding dating and sex. Discuss safer safe practices including appropriate condom and birth control use. 10. Ask your teenager if they are having sex. Remember most teenagers are afraid to be honest with their parents for fear of their reaction. So dont ask if you really dont want to hear the answer. Felecia D. Prepare For Exams With the Mind Map Technique For Making Notes

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Royane Real If you are a university or college student, you probably make a lot of notes when you are attending classes or reading your text books. Then later you review the notes you made when you are preparing for exams. You may have wondered if there a right way or a wrong way to take notes. Does one method of note-taking work better than another? There is probably no one way that works best for all people in all situations, since everyones brain is so unique. The main problem with taking notes the traditional way is that this is a very passive process. Simply taking notes does not get the brain very involved in interacting with the information. If you can get your brain to get more actively involved in organizing the new material you will remember it better. If you are strong in visual learning, you can benefit from making notes that include lots of graphs and drawings, even cartoons! If you are very high in auditory skills and weak in the visual area you will do better by tape-recording all the notes you need to remember. The following technique for note-taking is particularly effective for people who are highly visual. This method of making notes is sometimes called “mind-mapping” or making a “learning map”. Although it takes some practice to use mind-mapping effectively, most people who use it find they can retain and remember far more information with a lot less work. The essence of the learning-map (also known as “memory-map”, or “mind-map”) technique is quite simple. You will need a blank piece of paper, the larger the better. You will need at least one pen, more if you want to use a variety of colors. You will be trying to fill the entire page with your notes, so it is important to keep the size of your writing quite small. With practice you should be better able to judge what size of writing will work effectively. As you listen to the lecturer, or read the article you are studying, decide what you think the central theme is. For example, you might be listening to a lecture where you decide the central theme seems to be, “Conditions in Europe on the eve of World War 2″. Or you might be listening to a talk that has a central theme of “Strategies that plants use to survive winter”. Once you have decided what the central theme is, jot down the words in the center of the page, and draw a circle around the main theme. Don’t try to write down a sentence or a paragraph, just get down enough of the key words that will bring the ideas back into you mind. Keep listening or reading, watching for the first main sub-theme. When you come across the first major sub-theme, pick a spot on the page to jot down a few key words that sum up the sub-theme. Draw a circle around the sub-theme words, and then join your sub-theme circle to the main theme circle with a line. Each time you come across a new major sub-theme, write down a few key words to summarize the new idea, and draw a circle around those words. Then draw a line to join the sub-theme circle to the main idea circle in the center of the page. Eventually you will have a circle in the center with several spokes radiating from it. The lines or spokes don’t have to be straight, and they can be of any length required. The “circles” dont have to be circles; they can be squares, triangles, or oval squiggles if you prefer. You can use different colors to help you organize the ideas better. As the speaker or writer continues to present his ideas, you will find that some of the ideas being presented are additional supporting details that clarify or illustrate one of the sub-themes you have already identified. In this case you will write these “sub-sub-themes” down using just a few words, enclose them in a circle or squiggle, and link them to their sub-theme with a line. Eventually your sub-theme circles may have many spokes radiating from them as the author or lecturer continues to present his ideas. At a glance you will be able to take in the dominant themes of the talk and the underlying organizational structure of the ideas. If you happen to have any ideas of your own while you are reading or listening to the lecture, jot them down as well. This shows you have your brain actively interacting with the material. When you make a mind map or a learning map of all your notes, you create a very visual document that differs a lot from traditional methods of making notes for class. People who learn very well visually will particularly benefit from the way that learning maps clearly show the relationships between main themes, sub-themes and supporting facts and ideas. Try this method and see if this is the note-taking technique that works best for you! This article was written by learning expert Royane Real. How to Improve Your Work Situation

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Bill Dueease buWhy are so many people unhappy in their work situation? Why do people, who are successful at one career, have such difficult times coping with their new career? These problems frequently occur, because conflicts exist in their work relationships. Relationships between you and your work can also be considered the “games of work.” Games have basic rules to play, which require specific skills to succeed at playing. People win at the games they play when they achieve the game objectives and by operating within the rules of the game better than others. The “games of work” also have objectives and basic rules that must be followed to succeed. There are many different sports games and the objectives and rules are different for each game, sometimes dramatically so. There are three fundamental “games of work” that define the different relationships people have with their work. Yet, very few people who participate in the “games of work” understand the objectives, the rules, or even the game they are playing. Consequently, if they blindly operate under different rules, methods, and purposes than the conditions their work relationship (game) requires, they are bound to create conflicts. These conflicts result in serious stress and very poor success rates. For example, if a fully uniformed football player clamors onto a tennis court and operates under football rules with football skills by trying to tackle his opponents, he will create considerable conflicts and will undoubtedly fail at the game of tennis. The first step to succeeding at the “games of work” is to understand the objectives and rules of each game. The second step is to determine which game of work you are currently playing. The next step is to either adjust your work purposes and behaviors to suit the game you are playing or switch to the game you are best suited. Rules to Follow to Succeed at each Game of Work Lets discover the rules that must be followed to succeed at each Game of Work. They are strikingly different. 1. Bureaucracy: Virtually all government and most corporate work relationships fall under this game of work. The rules of the bureaucracy game that participants must follow to succeed are as follows: A. Do what it takes to protect or expand their positions. B. Divert responsibility, and take credit for desirable results of others whenever possible; C. Attend to the wishes and desires of those who make decisions about promotions, salaries, and work positions first and foremost, even if it means placing the success of the organization a distant second. D. Recognize how little, if any, control they have over what their jobs will be and that they have little, if any job security. E. Recognize that they are compensated for basically showing up. 2. Partial Entrepreneurship: Commissioned salesmen, multilevel marketing members, franchisees, most professional sports players, and real estate agents operate within the game of Partial Entrepreneurship. The rules of the game that partial entrepreneurs must follow to succeed are as follows: A. Take responsibility for work performed and the results achieved in their specialized fields of work, but not for the total business, even though they frequently work within the umbrella of a larger organization. B. Focus their energies on performing in their chosen fields and much less on the wishes of any possible superiors, or to extracting favors from subordinates. C. They are compensated based upon the quality and quantity of the results they produce within their chosen areas of responsibility. D. They have more control over what their jobs will be and they have much more job security. 3. Business Ownership: Anyone who has controlling interest (and many times non controlling interest) in a business plays by this “game of work.” The rules of the game that business owners must follow to succeed are as follows: A. Take full responsibility for their work performance and the success of their business. B. Learn to pass on as much credit as possible. C. Focus their energies first and almost exclusively on the success of the business D. They have full control over what their jobs will be and virtually total control over their own job security (whether they know it or not). E. They have no one in the organization to take orders from or to indulge, and they do not extract personal favors from subordinates that hinder the success of the business. F. They are in essence, compensated only from the profits of the business. Conclusion Once the above rules are understood, it becomes easy to recognize how important it is to play by the rules of the “game of work” you are participating in to succeed. For example, you will clearly struggle if you play by the rules of a bureaucracy, when you are operating as a business owner. The conditions and rules of each of the three “games of work” do not change. Either you change to match the game, you are playing or you find and play in the “game of work” that best suits you. Michael Jordan, one of the best basketball players of all time, could not translate his huge basketball knowledge and skills into a successful baseball career. He proved that the knowledge and skills needed to succeed at the game of baseball are much different from those needed to succeed at the game of basketball. Yet, he thought he could easily master baseball, because he had been so good at basketball. And when he returned to basketball, he had to work extra hard to re-sharpen his basketball skills to his previous levels. Likewise, the knowledge and skills needed to be a successful Bureaucrat, Partial Entrepreneur, or Business Owner, are much different from each other.
