Recycle Treasures From Trash for a Kid Craft Activity

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Nancy Johnson Years ago I was invited to teach a workshop to recreational leaders on ideas for a kid craft activity. I chose to share how they could use items around the house to create low-cost kid arts and crafts. Recognizing how many budgets are limited, Treasures from Trash was created. Enlist the children in saving items to contribute to your fun arts and crafts projects. This is a great opportunity to incorporate the importance of recycling and saving our landfills. Listed are some ideas of recyclable items to save, but look around and see if there are other items that can be used to create your own Treasures from Trash. Use your imagination and think outside the box! These recyclable items make great arts and crafts projects. Make sure to check the items so that they are clean and safe for the children to use. Egg cartonsPaper rollsBerry basketsBaby food jarsPlastic soda bottlesTuna cans (no sharp edges) Greeting cards and old calendarsSix-pack plastic ringsPaper grocery bagsMagazines (child appropriate) Coffee and drink cansOatmeal containersNewspaperAssorted sized cardboard boxesClean socks (The ones not lost in the dryer!) Some kid craft activity ideas include puppets, box sculptures, science projects, collages and homemade gifts. Puppets can be made from all sizes of bags, socks and boxes. Create a marionette with a shoebox and imagination! Many science projects such as making a tornado, rain or terrarium call for a plastic soda bottle. Use berry baskets to decorate for Mothers Day, Grandparents Day or Easter gifts. Making a collage is an inexpensive art project when using a lot of the items listed above. Put out old greeting cards, calendars, magazines, postcards, and paper scraps for the kids to create a unique collage. Save leftover craft supplies such as buttons, ribbon, lace, fabric scraps, and beads to be used on the collage. I hope this is a beginning of you creating your own Treasures from Trash projects. If you run out of ideas, just put the recycled items out and let the children create! They can be very resourceful and imaginative. As a mother, grandmother, and child development professional, Nancy Johnson, shares over 20 years experience working with children and planning activities on her website, Creative-Child-Activity-Notebook.com. Check it out for more school age child activity ideas including summer, holiday, party, nature, and child learning activity ideas. Traveling Back Home

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Kadence Buchanan The time has come to leave the place you have been living for the some time now and travel back home. Whether you have finished a degree or your job placement abroad was just terminated, the process of having to pack everything up and transfer them and yourself to your old room back home is never easy. Being a graduate student in a foreign country for the last couple of years, I have found myself, more frequently that I would like to admit, to miss my old room, my mother’s cooking, my father’s advice, my cat sleeping on my lap, my house. From the furniture to that movie I have stored somewhere in the living room, my house “smells” familiar everywhere I decide to look when I visit my home-country. Needless to say, when time comes for me to leave again, although I am excited to come back to my beloved apartment here in the “other” land, something seems impossible for me to leave behind; the memories of where I grew up. Everything I do now I love doing. I so lucky that I am not anywhere I do not wish to be nor do I suffer from being homesick that often. I am just concerned with the fact that although I love my parent’s house and I am always unhappy that I will not be able to see them anytime soon, I have come to a “weird” realization. My life now goes forward in another country. I am not feeling trapped or unable to do otherwise. I really enjoy the time I am spending in this foreign country and I will dare to admit that it has somehow become my “new” cherished home. My apartment, my friends, my truly incredible professors, my studies, my happy or unhappy memories, everything has made me evolve and become the person my folks see whenever I visit the house I grew up. Whether I want to admit to myself or not, the only thing that I miss is people. Friends or family would be silly for me to think that I can replace, but the things that I once seemed to cherish so, have already been replaced in my heart. I would love to have my CD collection available, or my beautiful couch to sit on and watch a movie, but regardless of their presence I will continue having a wonderful time and experiencing life as I should. What I am trying to say is the following. Although we tend to associate our home with the house we grew up in, which in many cases is where our parents still live, home is actually where our hearts belong. Perhaps in another graduate student’s case, home would actually be another house, country, or continent, but for me, I recently realized, home is where my mind travels when it wants to think of something relaxing. The last three times that happened, home was my “new” place. Hopefully, by the time I will have to go back, I will be glad I experienced my stay here in such a positive way. I wish you all the same. Building Support for Nonprofit Communications Among Your Colleagues and Leadership

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Nancy E. Schwartz A panel of three communications pros at the recent Communications Network conference discussed how to build the support across your organization that is necessary for communications that really help to achieve your nonprofit’s or foundation’s goal (a.k.a. strategic communications). Here are key points from the discussion: Place a communications staffer or consultant in each program team Karen Lake, Director of Marketing, W.K. Kellogg Foundation defines her charge as “putting communications to work to build and to expand on the work of our programs.” One resounding success is the Foundation’s placement of a communications manager in each program department to ensure that communications strategies are integrated into each program, from planning to execution. Cafeteria Communications Develop “cafeteria communications” so you can select from a comprehensive menu of communications products (newsletters, website, etc.) and activities (block parties, speeches, community events) as needed.

Joanne Edgar, communications consultant and former Director of Communications of the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, recommends that you and your colleagues maintain focus on your organization’s substantative goals. This focus in turn will guide your communications goals and thus, your selection of the communications products and activities that will move your organization toward those goals.

Edgar emphasizes that community activities are a vital communications strategy too frequently left out of nonprofit communications agendas. Clarify expectations from the start Edgar cautions that nonprofit and foundation communicators must identify leadership and board expectations as early as possible in the planning process. For example, if your board chair anticipates a three-minute segment on “Good Morning America” while you are focusing on regional Hispanic media outlets that reach the communities you need to alert about your services, you have a problem. If those expectations (and the related communications activities) are not aligned with your communications goals, make a strong case for your strategy of choice. Doing so proactively will strengthen your relationships with leaders and the board. Great advice from leaders in the field! Nancy E. Sending The Right Roses?

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Cynthia Marcano You have probably received or sent roses at least once in your life. Besides the obvious “Someone has thought of me”, what do roses say? Roses and their colors have different meanings. So before you send your next bouquet or after you have received one, you need to read this. Is there a secret message behind that delivery? As most people may know, the traditional bouquet of red roses signifies love. But nowadays, depending on who you ask, red roses can be described as anything from a classic bouquet of flowers to original and boring. One thing is certain however, red roses remain the most popular of them all. Yellow roses used to represent jealousy, but somewhere along the lines its representation changes to mean joy and friendship. Yellow roses with red tips represent friendship blossoming into love. . White roses are often known as the bridal flower, but the real meaning of white roses is purity, loyalty and innocence. Orange and Coral roses express desire and fascination. Be sure not to send the wrong message with this bold bouquet. Pink roses have different meanings depending on the shade of pink. Light pink roses express fondness and sympathy, whereas dark pink roses are meant to express the feelings of gratitude and appreciation. Purple Roses indicate enchantment and love at first site. On the hand, blue roses symbolize, fantasy and the unattainable. The black rose is known to represent death. They are not natural but instead dyed. Hint: Its pretty safe to say that your sweetie wouldn’t want to receive this bouquet (unless they have mentioned liking black flowers). When different colored roses are mixed, some of their meanings change. A mix of white and red roses represent unity. Whereas a mix of yellow and red roses symbolize happiness. White and yellow roses represent harmony. A mix of all colored roses says “You mean everything to me” due to broad mix of colors and their meanings. A single stemmed rose says “I Love You” and two roses intertwined represent an engagement. Any other single rose means “Thank You”. Whichever bouquet you decide to send, when the appropriate bouquet is end, it makes it that much more special. You are probably thinking, “What are the chances that the person receiving the bouquet even knows what the colors mean?”. Chances are they don’t. That would be the perfect opportunity to tell them that you thought of them enough to send the “perfect” arrangement, by researching the colors first. Just think, a gift with thought behind it weighs more on the heart! Even if you don’t take any of the information into consideration, at least you have learned something new. Tin Ceilings Of Old And New

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Arturo Ronzon The world of fashion works in a funny way. After a certain amount of time passes, the fashion of old becomes the new trend and what was new yesterday starts to become old really fast. Take the tin ceiling for example. Once upon a time, tin ceilings were the rave of the building industry. Tin ceiling panels were put on almost every new construction. They were the thing to have. Now, after many many years and many many fashion trends, the tin ceiling is making a strong comeback. Tin ceiling and wall panels are starting to make appearances in newly constructed buildings. The old tin ceilings in the old buildings are getting a lot of restoration and some are even being sold as antiques. Tin is a very soft and malleable metal and does not react to the environment very much. Steel can rust if not protected over the years but tin will remain the same. A buff or two and the shine will be restored. This amazing durability is the main reason why tin ceilings were never taken down and replaced. As such, tin ceilings remained where they were to await the next designer trend where they would be the center of attention again. Tin styles were popular decades ago because many an elaborate pattern were carved or stamped or both into it. Since tin was so malleable, craftsman of old were able to let loose their creativity and imaginations onto pieces of metal that they could shape to their hearts content. In todays world with advances in manufacturing technology, tin ceilings and panels can be produced to meet large demands easily. Advanced tooling technology allows a high degree of repeatability so that popular designs can be produced accurately and sold to consumers. Advances in metallurgy adds a new dimension to tin ceilings where other metals such as silver, gold or platinum are bonded with tin to create very artistic looking alloys. For those who can afford it, the antique tin ceilings and panels will add the beauty of yesteryear to their homes or offices. For everyone else, tin ceiling panels are quite affordable because tin is one the cheapest metals on earth. A Family of Truckers

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By Jeremy Rose Ive always been extremely close to my uncles side of the family. And no wonder. Of his two children, one is a year older than me and the other is a year younger. I remember times in my childhood when I literally spent weeks at his house visiting. However, towards the middle of my youth that atmosphere changed slightly. My uncle got a new job and I saw less and less of him. When I asked my father why that was he gave me a simple answer, Well son, youre uncle Curtis is a trucker now. I was too young to really grasp the meaning of that then. And as I continued to grow and continued to miss my uncle I began to resent the job he had taken. I saw it a something that tore at the fabric of my young reality. I saw it as something that distanced me from a relative I loved. Thats not to say I never saw him again. My uncle visited quite frequently, making pit stops in his big red rig at our house in between jobs. And he always brought gifts to cheer my sister and me up. Ive grown up a lot since then. Ive seen a lot of things. And Ive seen how my uncles family has turned out. He and his wife are still dearly in love. His children are grown and successful. And thats got me to wondering why. So, naturally, I hinted around the family, asking questions here and there, probing for an answer to my question. How could a family grow up so strong when its fathers job took him away so often. The answer it seems was quite simple. Perseverance. It can be a hard life. But to those that overcome the ordeals it can also be a very rewarding one. As I talked to my Aunt about the life she had lived the past ten years I understood how the obstacles had only served to strengthen her marriage. To show her how much her husband truly loved and cared for her. As my chatted with my cousins I came to understand how, though they missed their father at times, they had come to understand that he that he had sacrificed to give them a better life. I came to understand just how much that really means. So families, I have one word to give you. Persevere. Keep fighting the good fight beside your truckers. They love you. And much of what they do is for you, their families. It can be a hard life. But like I said, the rewards can easily outweigh the costs we all pay. -Jeremy Rose. Car Loan After Bankruptcy

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Terje_Ellingsen]Terje Ellingsen Although a car loan after bankruptcy is difficult to obtain, it is not impossible. While a bad credit loan is fairly easy to obtain in today’s competitive finance market, the situation is different with any loans or credits after bankruptcy. So the question you must ask and which I will try to answer is: Can I get a vehicle loan after I filed a bankruptcy? And my answer is: Yes you can. Then you may ask; how? Well, here are the options: You can get an unsecured loan, but you have to wait two to three years after you filed bankruptcy or You can get a loan even the day after you filed bankruptcy, if you have collateral or If you have made a down payment in order you can apply for a loan from a company who specialize in bad credit financing. The internet is a good place to find the lenders and all information you need. Be aware that most finance companies will refuse your application until 3 years after you filed bankruptcy. There are companies out there however, that are more keen than the majority to grant you an after bankruptcy car loan - the challenge is to find them. One way is to search for and join a credit union. A union is an organization with the purpose of helping it’s members financially. The probability of getting a loan after bankruptcy is higher with a credit union than with other companies. Whatever you do to get a loan, you have to start rebuilding your credit immediately. This is the best way to get the financing you want in the future. There are several ways to do that. One way is to put all the money you can into a saving account. Another way is to apply for a prepaid credit card. Be very careful with paying it off timely every month. This will increase your credit rate little by little, and your credit limits will also gradually increase. A bankruptcy is not the end of the world but an instrument for giving people a new financial chance. Try all of the advices I gave you above. If you don’t succeed the first time try one more time or even more than that if necessary. And most important; start rebuilding your credit today. Breast Augmentation: A Choice

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By July Black Breast augmentation affirms the identity of the person undergoing such surgery. It affirms who they are to themselves, and in turn, to those around them. This is because, in general, there are probably few other zones of the body we consider to be more significant than a woman’s breasts. Regardless of one’s gender or sexual orientation, we all recognize the significance most societies place upon them. For better or for worse, they are part of how we define women, much like how we treat faces as part of how we define people. However, unlike a new hairstyle, make-up, or overall change in fashion, surgical breast augmentation takes on a deeper meaning. It’s surgery. Not something that is easily separated from the person. It becomes a part of the person. This is why it’s so important to the person who makes the decision that they do so with a certain degree of comfort, of understanding, of willingness to enter the process, and the support of those close to them. Implants, for the purpose of breast augmentation, have mainly been used for two reasons: reconstruction and cosmetic. Regardless of the reason, implants have changed since the ones produced in the 1970s. It has primarily been their design, due to our knowledge of their impact on the body. As such, we know much more about implants today than when they were used in the 1970s. Today’s implants may still be made of silicone gel, but have apparently have a much lower risk of rupture than the earlier ones. In fact, the two main types: silicon gel and saline solution, both employ a silicone shell. However, the issue of rupture - whether silicone or of the saline solution variety - is a possibility, thereby requiring that implants be checked. One of the main methods used to check them are with mammograms. The surgical technique used is also a consideration. However, a lot can depend upon the surgeon and the individual themselves. Variables include the following: the surgeon’s preference, and the amount of existing breast tissue where the implant is to be placed. The main techniques are: sub-glandular, sub-fascial, and sub-muscular. In addition, there are different types of incision that may be employed by the surgeon: Peri-Areolar, Infra-Mammary, and Axillary. Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages. For this reason, it’s recommended that the individual consult their surgeon in advance regarding the different techniques and how they may affect them. There is also another type known as polypropylene string breast implants. They are less common as they don’t involve the use of a prosthetic device. Their use tends to be more documented in the adult video or sex trade industry. Also, regular checkups and procedures are required for such implants. Finally, depending on the country you live in, there may be regulations regarding the types of implants that may be used. For example, some countries may ban the use of silicone gel-filled implants, or only allow their use on a strict case-by-case basis. Regardless, an initial consultation with a surgeon is always important, as with any elective surgery. Cellulite: Nature’s Penance

Friday, September 14th, 2007

By Michael Russell It’s normal for women to have cellulite. It won’t kill you, it doesn’t make you sick and it doesn’t cause any pain. Yet you’d rather live without it. According to a dictionary, cellulite is defined as lumpy fat on thighs and hips. Some people describe it as orange peel dimpling of the skin and there are some additional spots where it makes an appearance like at the lower abdomen, buttocks and underarms. The fast is located in cells. They are located in large chambers which are walled up and fats are accumulated more and more over the years, the fat ‘joyfully residing’ within the chambers at ease and in the comfort of the cell walls. Fats are highly compressible, thus large amounts can exist in that little cell without any big problems. So whenever you pinch your belly fat, the fat pokes out and you get this cottage cheese or orange peel appearance, each dimple representing one cell of excess fat ‘deposits’. Anyway, you can exercise, diet, become a vegetarian, slather on cream, get massages, or go to spa, the cellulite will still be there. It is really stubborn and the bad news is that these fat cells will not give up the fat no matter how you cajole or coax, preferring the comfort and protection of the cell walls. There are also pills, creams, drinks, suits and diet plans but not many seem effective. You have seen a lot of ‘before and after’ pictures in adverts claiming that their products work. However, when you are playing around with your digital camera, you realize that these pictures are really the result of a change in lighting or post-processing enhancements that make the photos look convincing. Thus, whom should you blame? Nobody actually. Naturally, female hormones promote the cellulite formation so it is more common in women. It is also present in lean females. One would not find it in pre-pubescent females but it even appears in men who are deficient in androgens (male hormones). The facts tell you that you cannot entirely get rid of cellulite as long as you still have female hormones in you. Mechanical massage and suction techniques may help. Liposuction does help in a way to remove it but it is an invasive technique involving anesthesia and skin incisions and it is not a total cure that makes sure cellulite won’t appear again. What about infrared treatments that heat up the fat cells? They are not without their drawbacks; skin burns and inflammation have been reported. Thus, is there anything at all that will get rid of these irksome fat deposits? Some people believe that lasers to be the next ‘weapon’ in the cellulite ‘combat’. If only the laser beam can be directed to specifically bring down the walls of the cellulite, then part of the battle is won. If the laser beam can be controlled to not cause skin burns, that would be perfect. It is advisable that since there is no mortality or morbidity associated with this condition, you might as well live with it. You can coexist harmoniously and symbiotically with the cellulite and make it part and parcel of you until the female hormones make an exit when the golden age of menopause dawns upon you.
